Washington, DC
February 27, 2007

Cairo, February 3-7, 2007: Nearly 100 students from 17 countries in the Middle East and North Africa came together in Cairo for an Alumni Conference following their participation last summer in the MEPI Student Leaders Study of the United States Institutes program.  The five-day conference featured speeches by government officials and leading civil society activists, as well as presentations by many of the students on the civic engagement projects they are conducting in their home countries.

The Cairo event was the third annual alumni conference for this program, which includes intensive six-week training sessions each summer hosted by U.S. universities to introduce highly motivated students to American culture and values.  Participants come from the following countries, plus the Palestinian Territories: Algeria, Bahrain, Iraq, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Tunisia, and the United Arab Emirates.
