MEPI in Egypt

The following lists ongoing and completed programs in Egypt, as well as providing a link to Regional Programs, where an organization is working in two or more countries simultaneously. Wherever possible, we have provided a link to the organization’s home page. 

Ongoing Programs

The following programs are specific to Egypt (unless otherwise identified).  [MEPI reform pillars are listed parentheses].

Center for Development and Population Activity (CEDPA)

Empowering Women's Organizations in Egypt [Women, Democracy] – working in partnership with the National Council of Women (NCW), CEDPA is conducting a women’s empowerment program for grassroots women’s organizations in the governorates of Bene Suef, Qena, Fayoum and Minya Egypt, towards increased influence of women on governorate operational polices.  NCW local councils in the four governorates will support women's networks and carry out advocacy initiatives.

Egyptian Association for Developing and Disseminating Legal Awareness

Supporting Democratic Awareness [Democracy] this program strengthens the internal democracy within political parties by targeting young political party leaders (age 25-35) primarily through training and follow-up consultations, and also through ongoing meetings between party leadership and the trainees.  The Association will offer assistance to all 18 political parties in Egypt.

Egyptian Association for Supporting Democracy

Youth Advocacy Strengthening [Democracy] – this program is designed to equip 500 young civic leaders (18-35 year old) with political and advocacy skills, drawing on members of political parties, trade and student unions, and youth clubs, through targeted training workshops, development, and dissemination of civic education materials.

Egyptian Cognitive Center and Creative Child (ECC)

Awareness Campaign Against Private Lessons Being one of the Major Obstacles in the Educational Reform Process [Education] this grant is intended to help increase grassroots awareness of the nature and scope of the problem of private lessons in Egyptian schools, better informing the media of this problem, while providing parents with alternative methods to help their children study on their own.

Financial Services Volunteer Corps (FSVC)

Monetary Policy Consultations [Economic] – At the request of the Central Bank of Egypt (CBE), FSVC sent a former advisor to the U.S. Federal Reserve Board to consult with senior CBE management on developing a structure to help formulate and design the implementation of a new monetary policy.

Future Businesswomen’s Association

Generating Women Leaders and Revitalizing their Role in Society [Women, Democracy] – This grant is helping women in the Kafr El Shiekh area develop skills to become community leaders.  A broad range of women, including students and rural women, will be exposed to information about women’s political and social rights, both through meetings and through media and public outreach campaigns. 

Ibn Khaldoun Center (IKC)

Political and Electoral Rights [Democracy] – In addition to supporting the Political and Electoral Rights (PEER) program, IKC is working to publish a civil society newsletter, produce two annual reports (one on the status of civil society and democracy, the second on the status ethnic minorities), and complete the English translation of books on reformative Islam that will lead to a series of regional conferences.

New Horizon Association for Social Development (NHASD)

Leadership and Advocacy Skills Development [Democracy] – NHASD will work with youth in Old Cairo to equip them with the civic education, leadership, and advocacy skills to affect change in their local communities, through training, followed by the design and implementation of small advocacy projects.

Southeast Consortium for International Development (SECID)

Women’s Empowerment [Women, Democracy] – SECID is working to strengthen Egyptian civil society and women’s business networks by developing managers’ leadership skills, building business leaders’ understanding of community and civil society programs, and linking business leaders to civil society through board development, volunteering programs, and networks.

Sustainable Development Association (SDA)

Decentralization of Educational Tools Towards The Youth Participation in Decision Making Process [Education, Democracy] – this program is designed to help increase understanding of decision-making and problem solving in a democratic process by youth in the Alexandria area.  Some 600 youth will participate in model UN activities and, through this participation, will learn about key international issues, as well as how their country and community fit into the international scene.

United Group (UG)

Political Party Strengthening [Democracy] – UG is training mid-level political party leaders (under the age of 45) to equip a new generation of party leadership.  Through MEPI support, Egyptian lawyers were trained in electoral law and regulations so they could work as effective monitors in the November 2005 elections.

FSVC

Financial Service Volunteer Corps (FSVC): Partnership for Financial Excellence Part I [Economic] – This technical assistance program helped strengthen the financial systems of Egypt, as well as Jordan and Morocco, by promoting investment and employment growth in those countries.

National Democratic Institute (NDI)

Election Coverage Training for Egyptian Journalists [Democracy] – the objective of this training program for Egyptian journalists on election reporting was twofold:

  1. to enhance the professional skills of the participating journalists in election reporting; and
  2. to enhance the participating journalists' understanding of democracy and electoral processes in the United States.
